On 12 June 2017, the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission placed a permanent sign outside Blitzstein’s birthplace at 419 Pine Street in the Society Hill section of Philadelphia. In addition to unveiling the new marker, the ceremony featured performances of Blitzstein’s songs and prepared remarks on Blitzstein’s musical legacy delivered by the Foundation’s Associate Director of Programs and Promotion Elizabeth Blaufox. The Commission extolled Blitzstein as “One of the 20th century’s most influential American composers and lyricists.” The Cradle Will Rock is only the beginning; Blitzstein’s extensive, varied oeuvre cries out for recovery and revival.
