A Weill autumn is shaping up for 2017, with major performances of stage works, concert works, and song evenings in the works from Atlanta to Zürich. Here are some highlights:

Love Life

Weill’s 1948 Broadway trailblazer, his only collaboration with Alan Jay Lerner, receives its European stage premiere at Theater Freiburg in 2017, with opening night set for 9 December. Freiburg Dramaturg Rüdiger Bering provides the German translation of the book and lyrics, and one of the world’s foremost Weillians, James Holmes, conducts. Rarely revived, Love Life is a must-see if you can make it to Freiburg; the production will be based on the forthcoming critical edition of the show prepared by Joel Galand.

Many Mahagonnys

Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny will be all over Germany this fall, with repertory dates in Gera/Altenburg, Hildesheim, and Mannheim. Argentinians will want to warm up for spring with Marcelo Lombardero’s production, premiered June 2016 in Santiago, at Teatro Colón, 22-29 August (video). Make plans for the short but concentrated run on Zürich Opera House’s main stage from 5-24 November, with eight performances conducted by Fabio Luisi and directed by Sebastian Baumgarten. While you’re waiting, the Schauspielhaus Zürich will offer Die Dreigroschenoper in September.

Dueling Dreigroschenopers

Last season, Die Dreigroschenoper enjoyed an extended repertory run in Saarbrücken. Now Saarbrücken’s neighbor Trier gets into the act with performances opening 30 September. Not to be outdone, nearby Düsseldorf premieres its new production directed by Andreas Kriegenburg on 11 November. As usual, The Threepenny Opera will be performed all over the U.S. and other English-speaking countries. Check the Threepenny Opera performance calendar for the latest.

Two Deadly Sins

The opera house in Göteborg whips up a double bill of Die sieben Todsünden and Puccini’s Gianni Schicchi opening on 21 October, with eleven performances through 5 December. Weill veteran Antony Hermus will conduct. Adventurous opera buffs in Atlanta will be able to see it at Maison Rouge as part of Atlanta Opera’s Discoveries series, which offers “not your standard operas.” Jennifer Larmore sings Anna I!

In Concert

In addition to several performances of Weill’s Symphony no. 2 in the offing, the Symphony no. 1 will get an airing from the Arkansas Symphony 21-22 October. Aside from the stagings noted above, The Seven Deadly Sins will be performed in concert by the Winnipeg Symphony in early November.

Songs

Singers love to spice up their programs with Weill, and this fall several well-known names will stir him into their song evenings. The redoubtable Ute Lemper sings Weill in Europe and the U.S. this fall; her complete calendar is here. As for the others, we offer a few highlights:
