Vienna is buzzing over a new production of that musical theater classic, Die Dreigroschenoper (The Threepenny Opera). Hard on the heels of a major production at last summer’s Salzburg Festival, Theater an der Wien (also known as Vienna’s “new opera house”) celebrates its tenth anniversary season by bringing in internationally renowned director Keith Warner–who has directed Weill’s Der Silbersee at the Wexford Festival and Lost in the Stars at the New Sussex Opera–in for a new production, starring Tobias Moretti as Macheath, Nina Bernsteiner as Polly (see photo below), and Florian Boesch as Mr. Peachum. Two key women’s roles, Mrs. Peachum and Jenny, are filled by Angelika Kirchschlager and Anne Sofie von Otter, respectively. That qualifies as an all-star cast if anything does.
The new music ensemble Klangforum Wien, conducted by Johannes Kalitzke, will handle the musical side of things, with support from the Arnold Schoenberg Chor. While last summer’s production in Salzburg utilized new orchestrations by Martin Lowe, this production will present Weill’s original orchestrations, which have lost none of their luster, or power, since they were first heard nearly ninety years ago.
