A hardy perennial that has blossomed repeatedly this spring, The Threepenny Opera opens on 22 April at the Tony Award-winning Signature Theatre in Arlington, VA. The Signature is known for productions of Sondheim in particular and more generally for powerful stagings of musical theater. This will be the theater’s first crack at a Kurt Weill show. The company’s associate artistic director, Matthew Gardiner, directs, and Mitchell Jarvis plays Macheath.
Eighty-five seasons after its world premiere in Berlin, Threepenny continues to inspire directors, conductors, actors, and audiences. Weill’s insinuating score complements Brecht’s attack on the corruption of bourgeois society; the combination continues to attract spectators all over the world. With any luck, some of our elected officials will make the trip to the Signature and see how the other half (or is it 99 percent?) lives.
