Street Scene DVD cover

Weill’s most popular Broadway show is back on video! Street Scene, now often revived in opera houses, was recorded during the 2018 Madrid production at Teatro Real, which boasted a stellar cast that included Patricia Racette (Anna) and Paulo Szot (Frank), with Mary Bevan as Rose. John Fulljames directed (his third production of Street Scene in the last ten years), with conducting chores handled by Tim Murray. DVD and Blu-ray release is set for 22 November on Bel Air Classiques. The discs will play in any region.

The Teatro Real production won wide acclaim in the European press and has already been revived at Oper Köln (a co-producer) and arrives at Opéra Monte Carlo in March 2020. Racette and Szot brought power and pathos to Anna and Frank Maurrant, a disillusioned wife and brutal husband living in a New York City tenement. Their daughter Rose emerges as the central character after Frank kills his wife over her love affair. The quartet of leads is completed by Rose’s would-be lover, Sam Kaplan, played here by Joel Prieto. All four have major arias, the best known being Sam’s “Lonely House,” and the score includes a striking variety of music, including a jitterbug sequence, a children’s game, and a mock-lullaby.

Street Scene has been released on video before. The Houston Grand Opera production, directed by Francesca Zambello, traveled to Germany in 1995 and was filmed there, later released on Image Entertainment. That disc, now prized by collectors, is out of print and hard to find.

Issued on Bel Air Classiques.
