The Dresden Staatskapelle New Year’s Eve concert, an annual event, had a pops feel last year, as three stars of the classical music world united to present songs from German operetta and American musicals. Conductor Christian Thielemann, tenor Klaus Florian Vogt, and soprano Renée Fleming (photo at right) took the stage to perform eighteen pieces, divided between German and American theater scores. Fleming sang “Foolish Heart” from Weill’s One Touch of Venus. Recordings of the concert have already been issued on CD (Deutsche Grammophon 479 2483) and DVD (also on Deutsche Grammophon) under the title Tonight: Welthits von Berlin bis Broadway. This represents Fleming’s first recording of Kurt Weill. Maybe there will be more!
