Marcelo Lombardero grew up in opera houses and began his career as a singer. For the last twenty years, he has prospered as a director, leading productions all over Europe and South America. His resumé includes a long list of well-known 20th-century operas, and recently he has turned his attention to Weill and Brecht. Lombardero staged Mahagonny Songspiel in February 2016 at Teatro Colón in Buenos Aires. With that under his belt, he moves on to direct the full-length opera in Santiago. The cast includes Nikolai Schukoff (Jimmy), Maria Victoria Gaeta (Jenny), Kim Begley (Fatty), and Susanne Resmark (Begbick); David Syrus conducts. The opera is sung in German with Spanish supertitles.

Even though greed, corruption, and disparities of wealth are as prevalent in South America as elsewhere, Aufstieg und Fall der Stadt Mahagonny has not been staged often there. The last major production took place in Buenos Aires at Teatro Colón under Jérôme Savary in 2002 (Lombardero sang in the chorus). Now the Teatro Municipal de Santiago hosts the Chilean premiere. Mahagonny is a fixture today on the stages of North America and Europe–can South America be far behind?
