In a few short years, Feinstein’s 54 Below (under Studio 54) has become one of New York’s premiere cabaret venues, featuring up-and-coming talent as well as the grand old names in the field. Light Opera of New York joins forces with 54 Below to produce an all-Weill cabaret evening on 7 June, the first all-Weill evening in the history of the club. True to form, the singers are a mix of seasoned and fresh, led by Broadway and film star Mary Testa. No fewer than three past prize or award winners of the Lotte Lenya Competition–Maria Failla (Lys Symonette Award, 2012), Michael Maliakel (Thrid Prize, 2015), and Jacob Keith Watson (Second Prize, 2012)–will also be on hand. Gillian Hassert rounds out the cast, and Mattthew Stephens is music director. The program focuses on Weill’s Broadway shows (including The Threepenny Opera), and it promises to be a great show! If you can’t wait for 7 June, you can warm up for the concert on Sunday, 5 June, 9:00 p.m., at 99.5 on your FM dial, when Failla and Watson will perform with Matthew Stephens on a program titled “Everything Old Is New Again.”
